Earlier this month, GLLC legislators from all eight Great Lakes states signed on to a letter to Great Lakes congressional members in support of reauthorization of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Established in 2008, the initiative has coordinated U.S. federal funding across federal agencies and throughout the Great Lakes. The GLRI includes considerable support for state-related Great Lakes programs and focuses on these areas:
- the removal of toxic substances and cleanup of Areas of Concern;
- preventing and controlling the spread of invasive species;
- reducing nonpoint source pollution; and
- protecting and improving habitats for native species
The GLLC has long supported the initiative. The letter seeks program reauthorization for another five years.
